My Voice Your Voice Women's Voice

I moved down from the North six years ago, and though I had some friends in London, I wanted a place where I could meet other women. A friend told me about Kairos in Soho and 'Women's Voice'. I started to attend the sessions whenever I could and was interested in the variety of the topics chosen for discussion.

After a couple of years of being involved in KiS I started to facilitate Women's Voice once a month. I enjoyed (and still do) meeting and greeting the diverse women who come through the door. To me this diversity is one of KiS' strengths.

I was particularly struck one time when an older woman shared her experiences of being a lesbian in the 1950s. The younger women where amazed at how different life was then for women who loved women.

As a facilitator, I have seen many women come to KiS - and yes, some of them are looking for 'Ms right', others for friendship, and many others a safe space where they can share ideas and life experience and gain strength in a sense of community. Everybody who comes seems to be looking for something, which is not being offered by the traditional 'scene'.

Sometimes I am amazed at the depth of sharing and creativity, which emerges in the space, and I am grateful that such a place exists, a place where women's voices are heard, listened to and affirmed.

Topics include meditation, creative writing, personal development and spirituality and are listed on the web site. If you are a woman reading this who has not yet ventured out to Archer Street on a Tuesday evening, then why not try it? You never know you might still be involved in KiS six years down the line!

Susy Brouard

Susy facilitates Women's voice as a volunteer and she is involved in extensive facilitation and group work in her work. She gives an enormous amount to KiS and is also a Trustee.

Thank you to Susy, Top Trustee.

Who I am

(following Rumi)

Standing around a fire.
Villagers and tourists,
beings reaching being like prayer.
We sense each other's presences
sing over to ourselves, outside
Who we are, our realities
put aside across the fire.
I see a woman, about my age.
We meet one another
in the raw deep of our eyes.
We glance into our reflections,
gazing deeper, holding our lives
together like a garden
beyond the moon. Our languages
may only find a small patch of tuning.
Who we are is embraced out of saying
tonight. Sparks and flames repeat.
You and I, we unite in a slight smile.
Meanwhile, songs end. We are startled.
Who I am, who I have been
before and will be,
who I am is nothing
but a scoop of breath,
sharing life on that instant
between you and me, the sound
of this earth, somewhere near
the root of home, so quiet.

Evlynn Sharp

Evlynn is a poet, playwright and creative writing tutor in the community. She is a regular and welcome facilitator at Women's Voice.

Subha

Subha has been a Buddhist since 1990 and meditation has been part of her life since then.

She was ordained into the Western Buddhist Order in 1998 and has been teaching meditation since then. Subha’s first meditation teachers were women and she is keen to share her enthusiasm for meditation and especially mindfulness with other women.

Subha enjoys coming to Kairosinsoho and meeting other lesbians in a quiet comfortable space in central London and talking about what is of importance to us.
